Martin W. Seidel studied solid-state physics at the Technische Universität Dresden. He obtained his Dr. rer. nat. degree in 1983 with a thesis on magnetic properties and porosity, and his Dr. sc. techn. degree in 1991 with a thesis on electromagnetic testing of roller bearing components. He is co-founder of imq Ingenieurbetrieb für Materialprüfung, Qualitätssicherung und Schweißtechnik GmbH, which he led as managing director until 2016. He is author or co-author of publications on new developments in the field of materials testing, in particular eddy current testing and the Barkhausen noise method. One focus of his work concerns grinding burn testing. The result of this work is not only the book "Grinding Burn and its Testing” (“Schleifbrand und dessen Prüfung” issued by Hanser-Verlag Munich 2020) but also various training courses, for example on nital etching.
